When words fail, dogs do not
Our Beginnings
Northern Lights Therapy Dogs began in 2023 from the convergence of uncommon lives and a shared purpose. A veteran trainer, a grieving widow with rescue dogs, a counterterrorism expert shaped by 9/11, and a combat veterinarian returned from Afghanistan all came together when one challenge was laid down: “I want this dog in therapy dog work.” No program existed to make it possible—so one was built.
What started as senior care quickly grew. Crisis teams needed qualified dogs. Schools could not afford $95,000 therapy dogs. National standards demanded rigorous training and certification. Volunteers stepped forward with incredible dogs and the passion to serve. Montana’s “can-do” spirit took hold—MSU professors joined in, experts across the nation offered support, and chaplains and first responders opened their doors.
No one remembers the volunteers’ names, but the dogs are unforgettable—requested by name, cheered at games, and quietly working where hurt is heaviest. We began visiting fewer than one hundred people a month. Today we reach thousands, yet we still return each week to memory wards and hospice rooms. No matter how far our work expands into crisis and trauma, our devotion to our first calling remains steadfast.
